Summertime: Beware of these Common NY Personal Injuries

Summertime: Beware of these Common NY Personal Injuries

As the days get longer and the sun warms up the city, more and more people are out and about soaking up all summer has to offer in New York.

Unfortunately, pleasurable summer activities also make some personal injury accidents more prevalent during this season, so it’s important to know what the dangers are to keep you and your family safe.

Here are some of the most common summertime personal injuries in New York – and what you should do if you sustain an injury and believe you have a personal injury claim.

Pool Accidents

If there is one activity that seems to shout “summer,” it’s swimming in a pool. Pool accidents happen in both private and public swimming pools and are, unfortunately, very common.

Drowning, slip and falls, and other accidents, such as broken bones, occur in and around swimming pools. These accidents can be the result of a number of failed preventions, such as the absence of appropriate lifeguards stationed at the pool, neglect on the part of the owner to make people aware of potential hazards, facilities that aren’t properly designed, and getting jewelry, clothing, or limbs caught in pool drains.

Car Accidents

More cars on the road mean more opportunities for accidents to occur. People are simply outside and frequently driving to destinations in their vehicles, leading to more accidents. Also, kids are out of school, so there are more inexperienced drivers on the road. Add to that a greater multitude of people on bikes and motorcycles, too. There’s literally a hazard around every corner.

Car accidents can cause a litany of injuries, such as:

  • Broken bones
  • Spinal injuries
  • Whiplash injuries
  • head injuries
  • Nerve damage
  • Burns
  • Injuries to the internal organs

That’s why it’s a good idea to take extra precautions on the road during the summer months. Follow the rules of the road, and drive even more carefully.

Dog Bites

Another side effect of more people out enjoying the weather is that they bring their pets, like their dogs, along with them. This leads to an increase in the number of dog bites that occur in New York.

Dog owners must keep their pets leashed in public and be mindful of their dog’s behavior. Those who are at risk of attacks can reduce the chances of this happening by not approaching a dog that looks stressed. Also, don’t approach a dog that you don’t know. If you are bitten by a dog, get your injuries checked out by a medical professional right away, and consult with an attorney.

Injuries at Work

If you work outside, then there are some added risks to your job in the summertime. It can be easy to get too hot and become dehydrated or suffer from a heat stroke. You may also get sunburned or fall from a great height if you work in construction. If you labor on the roads, there’s an increased risk of collisions, as well, with more vehicles traveling.

If you get hurt at work, then bring it to the attention of your supervisor right away, and get proper medical care. If you need help recovering damages, then speak with an experienced lawyer as soon as possible.

Summertime is great but there are increased risks to your safety. Do what you need to protect yourself – and if you need it, don’t forget a lawyer is here to help.
